Kota Kinabalu City Mosque

This mosque is located at Likas Bay at the north coastal highway. It is an impressive example of a marvelous architecture. It resembles in some ways the design of the Masjid al-Nabawi mosque (The Prophet´s Mosque) in Medina, in Saudi Arabia. The City Mosque is built on a man-made lagoon, which creates a feeling that the mosque is floating above the water.

Sabah State Museum

The four-floor Sabah State Museum is the top cultural magnet in town, located on the corner of the Jalan Penampang and the Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. It is in a good spot (not far south of Kampong Air) and consists of the main museum, an art gallery, a science centre and a heritage village, all rolled into one big attraction. Expect to find lots of prehistoric relics, tribal artefacts and even a reconstruction of a limestone cave. The galleries have pottery and photographs, as well as quality art works from all over the region.

Borneo Art Gallery

Offering a pleasant change from the Sabah Art Gallery is the Borneo Art Gallery in the Asia City complex. It resides upstairs and displays works of local and regional artists. All paintings are for sale, with realistic prices, and you can easily walk here from the city centre. This is a good place to pick up a quality holiday souvenir, with original landscape paintings of local scenery being available.

Aquarium and Marine Museum

Situated on the campus of Sabah University, on the northern side of the city, is this quality marine museum. The attraction is based within the BMRI Research Institute and has eye-popping displays and facilities. Tanks are free-standing and include open-water reef and live shallow reef aquariums, along with a mangrove walk and other natty underwater-related features.

Mari Mari Cultural Village

The Mari Mari Cultural Village is situated amidst a remote forest setting in Kionsom, Inanam; 25 minutes away from the hustling and bustling city. Its surrounding atmosphere may faintly remind you of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Lost World’; in the Sabahan sense. The beauty of untapped nature is guaranteed to capture your eyes and heart as soon as you arrive at the village.
